How it all began...

The first settlers of Abtenau (arriving over the Strubberg from the direction of Golling) settled in the Au, near the Dachserfall waterfall. The village center was formed by the small group of houses around the Wandalm snack bar. With its fertile soil, access to water, and sheltered location, the area offered ideal conditions for early settlement. The Dachserfall waterfall played a special role: proximity to water was essential for daily life – be it for the supply of drinking water, for agricultural purposes, or even for early forms of energy generation, such as watermills. Furthermore, the surrounding landscape offered protection from floods and other natural hazards, making the area an attractive place to settle. Over the centuries, Abtenau continued to develop and relocated its village center to what is now the market square.
