Idyll in the moor
Lake Egelsee in Abtenau is an idyllic moorland lake nestled in the rolling hills of the Lammertal Valley and surrounded by reed-covered shores. This area has been a protected landscape since 1971 and offers visitors an incomparable natural experience.
The approximately 5-kilometer-long "Lebensweg" nature trail leads around Lake Egelsee and can be completed in about two hours. Numerous interpretive panels along the trail provide information about the diverse flora and fauna of the protected area. With a little luck, hikers may spot grey herons, various songbirds, or even deer in their natural habitat. The trail runs through sunny meadows and shady forests and is also suitable for families with children. The start and finish point of the "Lebensweg" is located directly in the center of Abtenau.
Historically, Lake Egelsee served as a site for mud treatments until the 1950s, where spa guests of the then "spa town of Abtenau" benefited from the healing properties of the mud. Today, the nature trail commemorates this tradition and raises awareness of the need to protect this unique habitat.
Please note that Lake Egelsee is a nature reserve and swimming is therefore not permitted. Please respect nature and help preserve this valuable ecosystem.
