Hohensalzburg Fortress - Salzburg

General information

The Hohensalzburg Fortress is a real eye-catcher high above the city's baroque towers. As a landmark that can be seen from afar, the castle is an unmistakable part of the world-famous silhouette of Salzburg. It appears mighty to the visitor from a distance, history can be experienced up close behind its thick walls.
Archbishop Gebhard built the fortress in 1077. In the following years, his successors were responsible for the further development of the fortress architecture. Around 1500 the fortress was given its current appearance under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach and thus significantly shaped the Salzburg city panorama. The original goal of the fortress was to protect the principality and the archbishops from enemy attacks. In all these years it has never been taken by foreign troops.
